Mainz relies on a high press and quick transitions using a 4-3-3. This formation is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and attack the opposition lines with verticality. By spreading the play wide and looking to exploit spaces behind the defense, Mainz aims to control the tempo through aggressive ball recovery.

R. Zorn plays behind a flat back four to maintain defensive stability. M. Honkanen and T. Ōkubo act as the central defenders, where Honkanen focuses on covering and Ōkubo works to win the second ball. M. Šarić plays as the left back, ready to push up the flank, while Ji-hoon operates as the right back to hold the defensive line. The unit works to squeeze the space between the lines and maintain a high line to keep the team compact.

The midfield functions as a three-man midfield with a carrier and a creative presence. Mariabel and João Eduardo occupy the central roles to control the middle, with João Eduardo often driving forward with the ball to link play. Ali Mayr plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find the feet of the forwards or arrive late into the box. This group is tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high and recycle possession quickly when the first wave of pressure is broken.

Mainz utilizes three attackers across the front to stretch the defence. N. Fadeyev acts as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. On the wings, Rai Maoi and R. Siebert act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create overloads in the half-spaces. These attackers press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition, creating opportunities for the team to break quickly in transition.

One major advantage for Mainz is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to build out from the back. The positioning of Ali Mayr and the wide attackers creates numerical superiority in the attacking third. Furthermore, the team can create wide overloads when M.
