SK Sturm focuses on a high pressing and vertical attacking style using a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup seeks to overwhelm the opponent in the final third by committing many bodies forward. The goal is to win the ball back high up the pitch and transition into scoring chances before the opposition can settle.

Khudyakov operates as the lone goalkeeper behind a very aggressive back two. Koller and Vallci act as the central defenders in this narrow defensive block. Because there are no full backs, Koller and Vallci must be ready to cover large amounts of space if the ball is switched. They need to win the header and clear the lines quickly to prevent direct attacks. This system relies on the defenders stepping up to play a high line to keep the team compact.

The midfield operates as a central block of four to control the center of the pitch. Heil and Balbo act as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Heil often works to intercept passes while Balbo drops deep to receive and protect the center. Moving ahead of them, S. Seidl and Gorenc Stankovic play in the half spaces to create numbers in the middle. S. Seidl looks to carry the ball forward while Gorenc Stankovic connects the midfield to the front four.

The attacking line is heavily populated with four players to stretch the defense. Kiteishvili and Weiper work as a central partnership, with Weiper acting as a target man to hold up the ball. Mamageishvili and Rozga stay wide as wingers to provide width and deliver crosses. Mamageishvili will often cut inside to find space, while Rozga stays closer to the touchline to pull the opposition wide. The front four are instructed to press from the front to force a long ball from the opponent.

One major advantage for SK Sturm is the ability to create wide overloads when the wingers and midfielders combine. This formation also allows for great compactness when pressing in a high block, making it hard for opponents to play out from the back. The sheer number of players in the box makes it difficult for the opposition to defend set pieces or crosses.
