Tottenham Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Robertson · van de Ven · van Hecke · Porro · Marmoush · Kudus · Maddison · Savinho · Gallagher · Tonali · KinskyTottenham focuses on a high press and rapid verticality using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the pitch by flooding the central areas and forcing opponents into mistakes deep in their own half. The goal is to win the ball back high up the pitch and immediately attack the space behind the opposition defensive line.
Kinsky acts as the lone man in goal, playing a sweeping role behind a very high line. The defensive unit consists of a two man pairing with van de Ven and van Hecke. van de Ven uses his immense recovery speed to cover the space when the team pushes up, while van Hecke helps play out from the back. This narrow defensive line relies on the midfielders to protect the center and ensure the defenders are not left isolated against long balls.
The midfield is a dense five man block that controls the tempo and volume of play. Porro and Robertson operate as deep lying players who shield the two center backs, with Porro often looking to carry the ball forward from the right. Tonali and Gallagher provide the engine in the middle, with Tonali looking to control play through his passing range and Gallagher pressing aggressively to win the second ball. Maddison sits ahead of them as the primary playmaker, looking to find pockets of space between the lines and deliver through balls to the front three.
In the attacking phase, Tottenham utilizes three attackers to stretch the opposition. Marmoush acts as a pressing centre forward, leading the hunt to force errors from the defenders. Savinho and Kudus operate as wide attackers, with Savinho looking to cut inside from the left and Kudus providing directness from the right. This front line is designed to create runs in behind and use the width provided by the midfielders to isolate one on one situations against full backs.
A major strength of this Tottenham lineup is the numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch, which allows the team to recycle possession quickly. The coordination of the five midfielders makes it very difficult for opponents to find passing lanes through the center. Additionally, the speed of transition from the midfield block to the front three allows the team to catch teams out on the break before they can set their defensive block.
This formation is a high risk high reward system built for aggressive, attacking football. It is best suited for matches where the team wants to pin the opponent into their own box and exploit spaces left by a high defensive line.
