RB Salzburg focuses on a high press and quick transitions using a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup is built to hunt the ball high up the pitch and overwhelm opponents with heavy numbers in the final third. The intention is to win the ball back immediately and drive forward with verticality to catch the opposition out of position.

Zawieschitzky starts between the posts to provide the foundation for the defense. The back line consists of a narrow pair of central defenders, Schmid and Boma, who must act as ball playing defenders to initiate attacks. Because the formation uses only two defenders, Schmid and Boma need to step up to squeeze the space and trigger a press while remaining ready to cover long balls. They must hold a high line to minimize the distance between the defense and the midfield.

The midfield is a four man unit designed to control the central areas and link the defense to the attack. Krätzig and Veratschnig act as a double pivot to shield the two center backs and recycle possession. Krätzig can carry the ball forward to break the line, while Veratschnig provides cover to prevent counter attacks. Ahead of them, Kjærgaard operates as an attacking midfielder in the left half space, while Kitano plays on the right to find pockets of space. This midfield group works to compress the midfield and win the second ball in the center of the pitch.

The attacking front line uses four players to stretch the defense across the width of the pitch. Redzic plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside, while Konaté operates on the left to provide width. Vertessen and Tabakovic act as two forwards in a partnership to pin the last defender and fight for aerial duels. This setup allows RB Salzburg to attack in combinations, using the wide players to pull the defense apart before delivering crosses or playing through the lines to the strikers.

This formation offers massive numerical superiority in the attacking zones and creates wide overloads. By pressing from the front with four attackers, the team can win it back high up the pitch. The movement of Kjærgaard and Kitano allows the side to create quick combinations in tight spaces to break a low block.
