Liverpool Football Formation
Starting Lineup
ALISSON (BECKER) · JEREMIE (FRIMPONG) · RONALD (ARAÚJO) · VIRGIL (VAN DIJK) · MILOS (KERKEZ) · RYAN (GRAVENBERCH) · ALEXIS (MAC ALLISTER) · DOMINIK (SZOBOSZLAI) · CODY (GAKPO) · BRADLEY (BARCOLA) · HUGO (EKITIKÉ)Liverpool focuses on quick transitions and high intensity using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the space in the opponent half and strike rapidly once the ball is won. The goal is to use wide players to stretch the defence while the central unit maintains a compact block to prevent counter attacks.
Alisson stays between the posts to command the area and sweep behind a high line. The back five consists of a central trio with Virgil acting as the ball playing defender who organizes the unit. Ronald operates as the right centre back to provide cover, while Ryan holds the middle to ensure the line stays tight. On the flanks, Milos and Jeremie play as attacking wing backs to provide constant width. These wing backs are expected to push high up the pitch to support the attack while being ready to track back and defend the wide areas.
The midfield operates as a double pivot to control the central zone. Alexis works to connect the defensive and attacking lines by receiving the ball from the centre backs. Dominik acts as the carrier who drives forward with the ball to break the line of the opposition midfield. Together, they must protect the space in front of the back five and win the second ball to keep the pressure high. This pairing is responsible for recycling possession and ensuring the team does not get caught out during the transition from attack to defence.
Liverpool employs three attackers to pin the last defender and create chaos. Hugo plays as a pressing centre forward to lead the hunt from the front. Cody acts as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and find space in the half spaces. Bradley stays wide on the right to deliver crosses and pull the defence apart. This attacking unit works in combinations to create runs in behind or allow the wing backs to overlap the winger. They press the opposition back line aggressively to force a long ball and win possession high up the pitch.
A major strength for Liverpool is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of Milos and Jeremie. The numerical superiority in the wide areas often leaves the opposition struggling to cover both the winger and the wing back. Additionally, the formation allows for high pressing in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back.
This 5-2-3 formation creates a heavy presence in the final third through verticality and width. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to exploit spaces behind a high defensive line or dominate through intense pressing.
