Starting Lineup
ARIJANET (MURIC) · SEBASTIAN (WALUKIEWICZ) · JOSH (DOIG) · JAY (IDZES) · FEDDE (LEYSEN) · NEMANJA (MATIC) · ISMAËL (KONÉ) · VASILIJE (ADZIC) · CRISTIAN (VOLPATO) · ARMAND (LAURIENTÉ) · SEBASTIANO (ESPOSITO)Sassuolo aims to dominate through a high press and rapid verticality using a 4-3-3 formation. The team looks to win the ball back high up the pitch and immediately look to hit in behind the opposition defense. This formation is built to play with high intensity, using aggressive pressing and quick transitions to catch the opponent out of position.
Arijanet stays between the posts to start the build up. The defensive unit works as a flat back four with Josh acting as the left back to provide width while Sebastian operates as the right back. In the middle of the defense, Jay and Fedde work as a central pairing to hold the line. Jay acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back, while Fedde is there to cover the space and win the second ball if the high line is bypassed.
The midfield functions with a three-man midfield with a carrier and an attacking presence. Nemanja works to shield the defense and disrupt play, while Ismaël drives forward with the ball to carry the ball forward into the middle third. Vasilije plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, finding ways to play through the lines and connect the midfield to the front three. This group works to squeeze the space between the lines and ensure the team can recycle possession quickly when the initial attack is blocked.
The attacking unit utilizes three attackers across the front to stretch the defense. Sebastiano acts as a pressing centre-forward to lead the hunt from the front, while Armand and Cristian operate as wide wingers who cut inside to create central threats. Armand pulls wide to provide width, whereas Cristian looks to isolate a one on one wide against the full back. This front line is designed to create runs in behind and use combinations to break the defensive block, often looking to deliver early crosses or cut it back for late arrivals.
Sassuolo gains a tactical advantage through the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having Vasilije and the front three work together, the team can trigger a press effectively to win it back high up the pitch. Another strength is the wide overloads created when Josh and Sebastian push up to overlap the wingers, forcing the opposition to defend a lot of space.
This 4-3-3 formation provides a high energy identity that relies on aggressive pressing and quick attacking transitions. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play out from the back or those that leave large gaps between their midfield and defensive lines.
