A flat midfield four operates ahead of the defensive line to squeeze the space in the middle. Шумков and Пісоцький must balance their duties by covering the space left behind by the wing backs. This midfield unit works to compress the midfield and force the opposition to play wide.

The attacking phase relies on a lone striker, Довгорук, who must hold up the ball to allow the rest of the team to move up the pitch. Because the formation lacks natural wide attackers, the team looks to use the overlapping runs of Верещак and Усенко to create service. Довгорук needs to find the feet of the striker and win headers to trigger the transition. The team attacks in combinations when they can break the line through the middle or use the wings to deliver crosses.
