Milan Football Formation
Starting Lineup
G. RAMOS (9) · C. PULISIC (10) · HUTCHINSON (7) · MOREIRA (22) · MUSAH (80) · RABIOT (12) · CHUKWUEZE (21) · PAVLOVIC (31) · INAÇIO (35) · GILA (32) · MAIGNAN (16)Milan prefers to play with a heavy high press and rapid verticality using a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup seeks to win the ball back high up the pitch to catch the opposition out of position. The goal is to squeeze the space and use the width of the pitch to stretch the defence.
MAIGNAN plays between the posts to sweep behind a high line. The defensive unit works as a back three with Gila as the right centre back and Pavlović as the left centre back. Inaçio operates as the central defender, acting as a ball playing presence to start attacks. These defenders must stay compact and step up to trigger a press, often leaving space behind for Maignan to cover.
The midfield functions with a central pairing of Musah and Rabiot. Musah acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball, while Rabiot works to shield the defence and connect the lines. Chukwueze and Moreira operate as wide midfielders, providing the width needed to spread the play. They must track back to help the back three when defending in a mid-block, but they are also tasked to carry the ball forward to support the attack.
Milan uses three attackers across the front to pin the last defender. G. Ramos acts as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. C. Pulisic plays as an inverted winger on the left, looking to cut inside and create chances, while Hutchinson stays wide on the right to provide crosses. The forwards press the opposition back line in pairs to force a long ball and win the second ball in the middle of the pitch.
One major advantage for Milan is the ability to create wide overloads when the wingers and wide midfielders combine. The formation also offers speed of transition, allowing the team to break quickly once the midfield wins possession. This allows the front three to isolate wide players in one on one situations during a counter at pace.
The 3-4-3 formation relies on intense pressing and quick ball movement to dominate games. It is best suited for facing teams that struggle to play out from the back or teams that leave large spaces behind their defensive line.
