PSV Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Gomes · Ooijer · Alex · Lee Young-Pyo · Vogel · Van Bommel · Cocu · Park Ji-Sung · Vennegoor · Lucius · RobbenPSV focuses on a high press and quick transitions using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the pitch and win the ball high up the pitch to catch the opposition out of position. The goal is to use the width of the pitch to stretch the defence before hitting them with vertical passes.
Gomes sits between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line works as a back five with Vogel and Ooijer acting as the central pillars who are dominant in the air and capable of clearing the lines. Alex operates as a wide centre-back to cover the space left when the wing backs push up. Lucius and Lee Young-Pyo act as attacking wing backs who provide width and are tasked to overlap the wingers to deliver crosses. The unit functions to stay compact and defend zonally while ready to spring forward.
The midfield relies on a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Van Bommel acts as the primary enforcer who shields the defence and wins the second ball, while Cocu connects the defensive and attacking lines by receiving the ball and driving forward. These two must work to compress the midfield and prevent the opponent from playing through the lines. They are responsible for recycling possession and ensuring the team maintains control when the attack stalls.
In the final third, PSV uses three attackers to pin the last defender. Vennegoor acts as a target man to hold up the ball and allow others to join the attack. Park Ji-Sung provides tireless energy to press from the front and track back when needed, while Robben operates as an inverted winger who prefers to cut inside to find space for a shot. This front line uses combinations to break the line and creates many runs in behind through quick transitions.
One major advantage for PSV is the ability to create wide overloads from the overlapping wing backs. Lucius and Lee Young-Pyo push high to force the opposition to defend deep. Another strength is the numerical superiority in the attacking third during transitions, as the wingers and wing backs can overwhelm the flanks. This makes it very difficult for opponents to defend against the speed of the counter at pace.
This 5-2-3 formation is built for high intensity and rapid attacking movements. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high defensive line and leave space behind their defenders.
