Because the formation uses only two defenders, Schmid and Boma must be comfortable defending one on one and winning the header when the opposition tries to go direct.

The midfield is the engine of RB Salzburg, operating with a massive five-man unit that provides total control. Krätzig and Veratschnig form a double pivot to shield the two center backs and protect the middle. Lindstrøm and Kjærgaard operate in the half spaces as inverted eights, looking to carry the ball forward and connect the play. Kitano plays as an attacking ten, sitting behind the striker to find pockets of space and play through the lines. This midfield group works to compress the space between the lines and trigger a press as soon as the ball enters their zone.

The attacking front three provides constant width and central pressure. Vertessen plays as a left winger who cuts inside to create space for others, while Redzic stays wide on the right to stretch the defense. Konaté acts as the lone striker, working to pin the last defender and hold up the ball to bring the midfielders into the play. The forwards press from the front in coordinated waves, forcing the opposition into mistakes. This attacking unit relies on quick combinations and making runs in behind to exploit any gap in the opposition back line.
