Starting Lineup

Krauß · Waldschmidt · El Mala · Moore · Johannesson · Skhiri · Sosa · Sebulonsen · Lochoshvili · van den Berg · Schwäbe

Köln focuses on a heavy verticality and aggressive pressing, utilizing a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to overwhelm the opposition through high numbers in the middle and the final third. The goal is to win the ball high up the pitch and quickly find ways to hit in behind the opponent defense.

Schwäbe sits between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line is extremely thin, consisting of only two central defenders, Lochoshvili and van den Berg. Lochoshvili and van den Berg must remain alert to act as covering defenders when the midfield pushes up. Because they play with such a high line, they need to be ready to step up and set the offside trap. This defensive group relies on the midfield to provide a shield and prevent direct passes into the space behind them.

The midfield is built as a crowded five man unit to dominate the center of the pitch. Sosa and Sebulonsen act as a double pivot to protect the two defenders and deny the turn to attacking midfielders. Skhiri and Krauß operate in the half spaces to link the defensive and attacking lines, often driving forward with the ball to create overloads. Johannesson plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find space between the lines and play through the lines. This midfield grouping works to compress the midfield and win it back high up the pitch.

Köln employs three attackers across the front to stretch the defence. El Mala and Moore act as wide wingers who look to cut inside and create goal scoring chances. El Mala provides width on the left while Moore operates on the right. Waldschmidt plays as a lone striker and must hold up the ball to allow the attacking midfielders to join the play. The front three work together to press from the front, forcing a long ball from the opposition. This setup creates many opportunities for runs in behind and allows the wingers to isolate a one on one wide.

The tactical strengths of this formation lie in its ability to create massive numerical superiority in the middle and attacking thirds. By packing the central areas, Köln can squeeze the space and win the second ball frequently. The high numbers in the final third allow for rapid transitions, making the team very dangerous when they break quickly. This lineup also allows the wingers to pull wide and create wide overloads when the fullbacks or midfielders push up to support.

This aggressive 2-5-3 formation is designed to dominate possession and force mistakes through a high press. It is best suited for matches where Köln can exploit a disorganized opponent through sheer numbers in the attacking zones.
