Kovar (Drommel/Olij) · Júnior (Dest/Kostić) · Gasiorowski (Obispo) · Flamingo (Nagalo) · Geertruida (Sildillia) · Schouten (TBD(Fernandez)) · Wanner (Sano) · Til (Mijnans) · van Bommel (Perišić) · Man (Bajraktarevic/Ouaissa) · Pepi (Pléa)PSV aims to play a high intensity game focused on direct attacking play and heavy pressing through a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to stretch the opposition by keeping players high up the pitch and forcing turnovers in the final third. The team looks to win the ball back quickly to catch the defense before they can settle.
Kovar acts as the last line of defense between the posts. The back line operates as a flat back four to maintain a compact unit when the team drops into a mid block. Geertruida works as an attacking full back to provide width, while Júnior also pushes up to support the flanks. In the center, Gasiorowski and Flamingo act as the primary defenders, with Flamingo providing aerial strength to clear lines and Gasiorowski covering space behind the high line.
The midfield utilizes a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Schouten and Wanner sit in front of the defense to shield the back four and break up play. Schouten is tasked to sit deep and recycle possession, while Wanner drives forward with the ball to connect the defensive and attacking lines. This pair must work hard to track back and prevent opponents from playing through the lines when the team loses possession.
The attacking front line is composed of four players designed to pin the last defender and create constant pressure. Pepi and Til operate as two forwards in a partnership, with Pepi often acting as a pressing centre forward to hunt the ball. On the wings, van Bommel and Man act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to pull the opposing full backs out of position. This setup allows the team to attack in combinations, looking to hit in behind on the transition or deliver crosses into the box for the central strikers.
One major advantage for PSV is the ability to create wide overloads when the full backs join the attack. The formation also allows for the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for the opponent to play out from the back. By keeping four players high, the team can quickly transition from a mid block into a direct attack.
This 4-2-4 formation is designed for a high octane offensive style that relies on winning the second ball. It is best suited for games where the team needs to overwhelm a low block or exploit a high defensive line through speed.
