Starting Lineup
Muslera (Iacovich) · Mancuso (Meza) · Nuñez/LGP (Pierani) · Palacios (Benedetti*, Messina) · JTB (Arzamendia) · REFUERZO ((Piovi) Neves) · Piovi (Castro (BR)) · Correa (Cetre, Aguirre) · Baltasar (Perez (TP)) · Tiago ((JC) Monsalve) · Guido (Icardi, Gaich)Estudiantes (LP) aims to overwhelm opponents with a high press and rapid verticality using a 3-3-4. This formation is built to play a high tempo game that relies on heavy pressure in the final third and quick transitions. By flooding the pitch with attacking players, the team seeks to win the ball high up the pitch and strike before the opposition can settle.
Muslera operates between the posts to command the area and sweep behind a high line. The defensive unit uses a back three consisting of Palacios as the left centre-back, REFUERZO in the middle, and Nuñez/LGP on the right. Palacios and Nuñez/LGP must hold a high line to squeeze the space, while REFUERZO acts as the central anchor to cover any runners through the middle. This back three must stay compact to prevent long balls from breaking the line.
The midfield works as a three-man midfield with a carrier to bridge the gap between the back three and the front four. Baltasar sits centrally to shield the defence and recycle possession, while Mancuso and Piovi operate as runners who drive forward with the ball. Mancuso and Piovi are tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high, ensuring the team maintains dominance in the center of the park. This trio links the defensive unit to the attack by playing through the thirds.
The front line is extremely aggressive, utilizing four attackers to pin the last defender. Correa and Guido act as a central partnership, with one often acting as a pressing centre-forward to disrupt the build up. JTB plays as a wide winger on the left and Tiago occupies the right as an inverted winger who looks to cut inside. This setup creates constant runs in behind and allows the team to attack in combinations, frequently looking to deliver early crosses or find the feet of the striker.
One major tactical advantage for Estudiantes (LP) is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back. The sheer number of players in the attacking zone creates wide overloads and allows for immediate pressure if possession is lost. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the midfield trio and the four forwards can break quickly to exploit gaps in a retreating defensive block.
This 3-3-4 formation is designed for a high intensity game meant to bully the opponent. It is best suited for situations where the team needs to break down a low block through sheer numbers and constant pressure.
