Starting Lineup

Romero · Le Normand · Hancko · Grimaldo · M. Llorente · Hjulmand · Koke · Sørloth · J. Alvarez · Lookman · Oblak

Atlético focuses on a direct and aggressive style of play through a 3-4-3. This formation is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly with verticality. The team looks to squeeze the space between the lines and force mistakes in the opposition half. By using a high press, Atlético can disrupt the build up of the opponent and create chances from turnovers.

Jan Oblak acts as the last line of defense, providing security while the team pushes forward. The back three consists of Hancko, Romero, and Le Normand. Hancko plays as the left center back, while Le Normand sits on the right to provide aerial strength. Romero acts as the central defender to sweep behind the line and cover for the wide players. This defensive unit holds a high line to keep the team compact.

The midfield functions with a central pairing that connects the defense to the attack. Koke, the captain, sits in the left central midfield role to dictate play and recycle possession. Hjulmand sits beside him to shield the defense and win the second ball. On the flanks, Grimaldo plays as a left midfielder who provides width and ability to whip it in. M. Llorente operates as the right midfielder, using his pace to carry the ball forward and track back when defending.

In the attacking third, the team uses three attackers to stretch the defense. Sørloth acts as the lone striker and target man to hold up the ball and win headers. J. Alvarez plays on the left wing and cuts inside to find space between the lines. Lookman operates on the right as an inverted winger to threaten the far post. These players press from the front to pin the last defender and create space for late runs.

One major advantage for Atlético is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. This puts immense pressure on the opposition goalkeeper and defenders. Another strength is the width provided by Grimaldo and M. Llorente, which allows the team to create wide overloads. This setup also allows the team to switch play quickly to isolate wide players in one on one situations.

This 3-4-3 formation is designed for high intensity and rapid transitions. It is best suited for games where the opponent tries to play out from the back.
