Starting Lineup

Marmoush · Maddison · Mudryk · Gallagher · Tonali · Robertson · van de Ven · van Hecke · Porro · Kudus · Kinsky

Tottenham aims to overwhelm opponents through a high press and heavy verticality using a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup focuses on rapid ball recovery and quick transitions to catch the opposition out of position. By pushing players high up the pitch, Tottenham looks to control large areas of the field and force the game into chaotic, high tempo exchanges.

Kinsky stays between the posts to oversee the defensive line. Because this formation uses only two central defenders, van de Ven and van Hecke must operate as high line defenders who are ready to sprint back if the opposition plays a long ball. van de Ven uses his recovery speed to cover space behind his partner, while van Hecke needs to be dominant in the air and strong in one on one duels. The lack of full backs means these two central defenders must hold the line and intercept passes to prevent direct attacks.

The midfield operates as a four man block to provide both width and central presence. Porro and Robertson act as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Porro works to carry the ball forward into the half spaces, while Robertson stays deeper to protect the central defenders. In front of them, Gallagher and Tonali act as two attacking midfielders who press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. Gallagher is known for his relentless pressing intensity, whereas Tonali looks to drive forward and find passes that break the line.

The attacking unit consists of four players designed to stretch the defense. Kudus and Mudryk act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to provide width, while Kudus uses his dribbling to beat his marker and Mudryk looks to cut inside. In the central areas, Maddison and Marmoush work as a two man partnership. Maddison functions as a playmaker who finds the feet of his teammates, while Marmoush acts as a pressing center forward to bother the opposition back line. This setup is built to create runs in behind and allow the wingers to receive the ball in space.

A major advantage of this 2-4-4 formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By placing four attackers and two advanced midfielders high up the pitch, Tottenham can trigger a press easily to win the ball back in dangerous areas. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when the midfielders push high, which forces the opposition to defend much more space.

This formation relies on extreme aggression and high energy to disrupt the opponent. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back or cannot handle a sustained high press.
