Brighton Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Verbruggen (Steele) · Dunk (Struijk) · Vuskovic (Svoboda) · Wieffer (Costinha) · Kadioglu (Boscagli) · Ayari (Chema Andrés) · Groß (Gomez / O'Riley) · Hinshelwood + (Yalcouyé) · Minteh + (Yohanna / Azeez) · Mitoma + (De Cuyper / Osman) · Rutter (David / Kostoulas)Brighton prioritizes a heavy high press and quick verticality in a 4-5-1. This formation is built to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately look to hurt the opposition in transition. The goal is to suffocate the opponent in their own half before breaking through the lines.
Verbruggen operates between the posts to start play from the back. The defensive line functions as a flat back four where Dunk acts as a ball playing defender to progress the ball. Vuskovic stays alongside him to cover the space and defend zonally. Kadioglu acts as an attacking wing back to provide width on the left, while Wieffer plays as a more defensive wing back to help manage the right side. This unit works to squeeze the space between the lines and keep the distance between the defense and midfield small.
A crowded midfield unit controls the center of the pitch. Ayari and Groß work as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Groß helps protect the central zone while Ayari looks to win the second ball. Minteh and Mitoma operate in the half spaces to push the team forward, with Mitoma using his dribbling style to beat defenders. Hinshelwood connects the defensive and attacking lines by carrying the ball forward. This five man group allows Brighton to dominate the middle of the park and press in a mid block when needed.
The attacking phase relies on the work of Rutter as a lone striker. Rutter acts as a pressing centre forward to force the opposition back line into mistakes. He holds up the ball to allow Minteh and Mitoma to join the attack. The width comes from the wingers and the overlapping runs from Kadioglu. When the team transitions, they look to hit in behind on the transition or find the feet of the striker to create combinations.
One major advantage for Brighton is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The midfield and front line work together to trigger a press that forces long balls. Another strength is the numerical superiority in midfield which makes it difficult for opponents to find passing lanes through the center. The formation also allows for quick switches of play to isolate wide players in one on one situations.
This lineup is a high energy system designed to dominate through pressing and verticality. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
