A double pivot controls the middle of the pitch to link the defence and the attack. Schouten sits deep to shield the defence and recycle possession, providing a base for others to push forward. Beside him, Wanner acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball and connect the lines. This pair must work hard to intercept passes and prevent the opposition from playing through the middle, often needing to drop deeper to assist the back four when facing a heavy press.

The attacking unit uses two forwards in a partnership alongside two wide wingers. Pepi and Til lead the line as a dual centre forward pairing, looking to make runs in behind or combine in tight spaces. On the flanks, van Bommel and Man act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create overloads. This front four is designed to press from the front, forcing the opposition into mistakes and creating chances through rapid transitions and cutbacks from the byline.

PSV gains a massive advantage through the wide overloads created by the combination of full backs and wingers. The formation also allows for high speed of transition, as the four attackers can immediately sprint forward to exploit space. By keeping the front four high, the team can squeeze the space in the opponent half and win the ball back high up the pitch.
