Sunderland relies on a high press and quick transitions in a 4-5-1. The team focuses on squeezing the space high up the pitch to win the ball back quickly and strike while the opposition is out of position. This formation is built to play with high energy, using a compact midfield to dominate the center and support a lone striker.

Roefs acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back four operates with a high line to keep the distance between the defensive and midfield units small. Ballard and Alderete act as central defenders, with Ballard providing strength in the air and Alderete covering space behind the line. On the flanks, Mukiele and Méthalie provide width and must track back to prevent crosses, though they are ready to push up and support the attack.

The midfield is a dense five man block designed to control the middle of the pitch. Xhaka and Sadiki form a double pivot to shield the defense, with Xhaka using his passing range to distribute the ball from deep. Hume, Angulo, and Le Fée operate ahead of them to press aggressively and win the ball in the middle third. Le Fée helps connect the defensive and attacking lines, while Hume and Angulo look to arrive late into the box to support the goal threat.

Sunderland utilizes a lone striker in Brobbey to lead the line. Brobbey acts as a pressing centre forward, working to pin the last defender and disrupt the opposition build up. The team attacks through combinations, where the wide midfielders pull wide to stretch the defense and create space for late runs from the midfield. This movement allows the team to transition from a mid block to a direct attacking threat through the center or out wide.

One major advantage for Sunderland is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to play out from the back. The midfield block provides compactness when defending, making it very hard for the opposition to play through the middle. Additionally, the presence of the double pivot allows the team to maintain control while the more advanced players move forward.
