Starting Lineup

Deman · Weiser · Friedl · Wojcik · Lynen · Regeer · Stage · Grüll · Chuki · Itten · Schlager

Werder Bremen focuses on a high press and aggressive verticality through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and immediately attack the opposition defense. The goal is to crowd the middle of the pitch and use width to stretch the opponent.

Schlager plays behind a very narrow defensive line consisting of Friedl and Wojcik. Because there are only two central defenders, Friedl and Wojcik must hold the line and be ready to step up to engage attackers early. They often play in a high line to squeeze the space between the defense and the midfield. They need to be prepared to cover large areas of grass if the opposition breaks the first line of the press.

The midfield is the engine of the Werder Bremen lineup, utilizing a heavy five-man unit. Weiser and Deman act as a double pivot to shield the two center backs and win the second ball. In front of them, Lynen and Regeer operate in the half-spaces to connect the defense to the attack. Stage plays as an attacking ten, looking to find pockets of space and play through the lines. This midfield group works to compress the midfield and prevent opponents from playing through the center.

Up front, the team uses three attackers to pin the last defender. Itten acts as a pressing centre-forward to lead the line and hold up the ball for others. Grüll and Chuki play as wide wingers, with Grüll hugging the touchline to provide width while Chuki looks to cut inside and threaten the box. The attackers work together to press from the front, forcing a long ball from the opposition. They look to create runs in behind and use quick combinations to break the line.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield to control the central areas of the pitch. Werder Bremen can also create wide overloads when the midfielders push high to support the wingers. The ability to press in coordinated waves makes it very difficult for opponents to build play from the back.

The 2-5-3 is a high risk, high reward formation built for aggressive pressing and quick transitions. It is best suited for games where the team needs to dominate possession and overwhelm the opponent in their own half.
