Athletic focuses on high pressing and verticality through a 4-3-3. This formation is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly once it is recovered. The team looks to push the opposition back and use the full width of the pitch to stretch the defence.

Álex sits between the posts to command the area. The back line operates as a flat back four where Yeray acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. Aitor stays close to him to cover the space and provide stability. Hugo functions as an attacking full back to provide width, while Unai covers the left side and can overlap to support the winger. The defensive unit works to keep the lines tight and press in a mid-block when the ball is not in the danger zone.

The midfield works as a three-man midfield with a carrier and a creative presence. Beñat occupies the central spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. One Beñat role helps to shield the defence and win the second ball, while the other drives forward with the ball to create chances. Peio plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to find the feet of the striker and pick up runners in the final third. This midfield unit is designed to compress the midfield and deny the turn for the opposition.

Athletic uses three attackers across the front to pin the last defender. Gorka acts as a pressing centre-forward to lead the line and hold up the ball. Robert plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside and create goalscoring chances, while Álvaro stays wide on the left to whip it in from deep. This front line works to split the defence with a through ball and creates runs in behind to exploit gaps. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

The team also gains wide overloads from the movement of Hugo and Unai alongside the wingers.
