Mainz looks to dominate through a heavy high press and rapid transitions using a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup relies on squeezing the space high up the pitch to win the ball back quickly and catch the opposition out of position. The goal is to use the width of the pitch to stretch the defence before moving vertically through the middle.

Robin acts as the last line of defence in goal. The defensive unit sits in a back three consisting of Fabio, Dominik, and Stefan. Fabio and Stefan act as wide centre-backs who can cover the space left by the wing backs, while Dominik remains central to win the header and clear the lines. They play a high line to keep the team compact and trigger a press whenever the opponent tries to play out from the back.

The midfield functions as a five man unit that controls the central areas. Jae-Sung plays as the advanced midfielder in the hole to connect the lines and arrive late into the box. Kaishu and Nadiem act as the central pairing, with Kaishu working to shield the defence while Nadiem looks to carry the ball forward into the half spaces. Philipp and Silvan occupy the wide areas as wing backs, tasked to provide width, track back to defend, and deliver crosses when the team moves into the final third.

The attacking front line uses two forwards in a partnership to pin the last defender. Sheraldo and Phillip work in tandem to harass the opposition centre-backs and press from the front. Sheraldo often looks to find the feet of the striker or run in behind, while Phillip works to hold up the ball and lay it off to the oncoming midfielders. This duo forces the opposition to defend deep, creating space for Jae-Sung and the wing backs to exploit the gaps between the lines.

Mainz gains a significant tactical advantage through wide overloads when Philipp and Silvan push up to join the attack. This creates many one on one situations for the wingers and allows the team to spread wide and stretch the defence. The ability to press in coordinated waves also ensures that the midfield remains compact and difficult to play through.

This 3-5-2 formation is built for a high intensity game that relies on winning the second ball. It is best suited for facing teams that play a slow build up and struggle to handle constant pressure in their own half.
