Köln aims to play a high press and vertical game to catch opponents off guard. This 4-2-4 formation is built to overwhelm the opposition through heavy numbers in the final third. By pushing the lines high, Köln looks to win the ball back quickly and strike before the defensive unit can settle.

In goal, RON-ROBERT acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit operates as a flat back four, with SEBASTIAN playing as the right back and BORNA as the left back. JOËL and RAV VAN form the central pairing, tasked with holding the line and covering for the full backs when they push up. The defensive unit works to squeeze the space and maintain a high line to support the aggressive press from the front.

The midfield consists of a double pivot with TOM and ÍSAK. These two players must act as the engine, with one often dropping deep to shield the defense while the other carries the ball forward to connect the lines. They are responsible for recycling possession and ensuring the distance between the defense and the attack does not become too large. TOM and ÍSAK must be ready to intercept passes and protect the space in front of JOËL and RAV VAN during transitions.

The attacking unit is split into four players, creating constant tension for the opposition back line. LINTON and JAN act as wide wingers, looking to stretch the defense and get to the byline to deliver crosses. THIJS and LUCA operate as a partnership of two center forwards, using their presence to pin the last defender and make runs in behind. This lineup uses the width provided by LINTON and JAN to create space in the middle for THIJS and LUCA to find the feet of the striker or strike from central positions.

One major strength of this lineup is the ability to create wide overloads when the full backs join the attack. Another advantage is the heavy central presence, which forces the opposition to defend in very tight spaces. The high number of attackers allows Köln to press in coordinated waves, making it difficult for the opponent to play out from the back.
