Starting Lineup

SK Rapid relies on a heavy vertical game and aggressive pressure through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to overload the central areas and force the opposition into mistakes by dominating the middle of the pitch. The goal is to win the ball high up the pitch and attack the defensive line with speed and directness.

Hedl sits in goal as the last line of defense. The defensive unit consists of a narrow back two with Horn and Schöller acting as the central defenders. Horn and Schöller must hold the line and be ready to cover wide areas when the midfield is bypassed. Because of the high line used by SK Rapid, they must be quick to track back and clear the lines when facing long balls. The two defenders must work closely to keep a compact shape and defend zonally to protect the central space.

A massive five man midfield provides the engine for this system. J. Auer and Bolla operate as a double pivot to shield the defense and protect the two central defenders. J. Auer focuses on cutting off the passing lane, while Bolla works to win the second ball and recycle possession. In front of them, Schaub and Seidl act as two tens in the half spaces to connect the lines. Schaub works to find the feet of the striker, whereas Seidl looks to carry the ball forward into attacking positions. Tilio plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to press aggressively and link the midfield to the front three.

The attack is composed of three players designed to stretch the defense. Adamsen acts as a pressing centre forward to pin the last defender and disrupt the build up. On the flanks, Wurmbrand and Y. Demir play as wide wingers who hug the touchline to provide width. Wurmbrand and Y. Demir look to get to the byline and deliver early crosses into the box. This front three works to hit in behind on the transition, often looking for runs in behind or combinations to break the lines.

This formation offers massive numerical superiority in midfield, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. SK Rapid can also use the high press from Tilio, Adamsen, and the wingers to trigger a press in a mid-block or higher. The ability to overload the central zones allows the team to dominate possession in the middle thirds.

SK Rapid uses this lineup to overwhelm opponents through central congestion and high pressure. It is a formation best suited for games where the team wants to dictate the tempo and force the opponent into a defensive low block.
