Starting Lineup

Руй Силва · Араухо · Дебаст · Инасиу · Фреснеда · Альтимира · Думбия · Саласар · Гонсалвеш · Катамо · Суарес

Sporting CP aims to play a direct and aggressive game using a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to attack the opposition quickly and push numbers forward in every offensive phase. The goal is to stretch the defence and use the pace of the attackers to break the lines.

Руй Силва operates as the goalkeeper to organize the defensive line. The back four functions as a flat back four to maintain a compact line. Фреснеда plays as the right back to provide width, while Араухо acts as the left back. In the middle, Инасиу and Дебаст defend the central zone, with Инасиу working as a ball playing defender to start attacks. The unit works together to hold the line and prevent runs in behind while the full backs try to support the wings.

The midfield consists of a double pivot to control the central space. Альтимира and Думбия work as the two central midfielders to protect the back four. Альтимира connects the defensive and attacking lines by recycling possession, while Думбия works to win the second ball and shield the defence. This pairing must sit deep when out of possession to cover the space left by the advanced attackers.

Sporting CP uses four attackers to overwhelm the opponent. The front line features two forwards in a partnership with Саласар and Суарес acting as the central strikers. They work to find the feet of the striker and win the header during crosses. On the flanks, Катамо and Гонсалвеш act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to spread the defence. This setup is designed to create cutbacks from the byline and allow the forwards to hit in behind on the transition.

This formation provides significant attacking threat by isolating wide players in one on one situations. The presence of four forwards creates constant pressure on the opposition back line. Sporting CP can also use the speed of transition to catch teams out of position once the ball is won in the middle third.

The 4-2-4 formation is a high risk, high reward system centered on offensive pressure. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to chase a goal or against opponents that play a low block.
