Milan aims to dominate through high pressing and rapid transitions using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition in the final third by flooding the central areas and using width to stretch the defense. The team looks to win the ball high up the pitch and move the ball forward through quick combinations to catch opponents out of position.
Donnarumma acts as the last line of defense, often sweeping behind a very high line to manage long balls. The defensive unit consists of a two man center back pairing with Gabbia (c) acting as the leader. Gabbia (c) and Buongiorno must be physically dominant in the air and capable of defending man to man when the team pushes high. Because there are only two central defenders, they must stay compact and squeeze the space to prevent runners from getting behind them.
The midfield is a massive five man block designed to control the center of the pitch. Udogie and Santos operate as a double pivot to shield the defense and provide a base for build up play. Ricci and Rovella occupy the half spaces to drive forward with the ball and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Tonali plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to play through the lines and arrive late into the box to score. This midfield group allows Milan to maintain heavy pressure and recycle possession quickly.
The attacking trio focuses on creating chaos with constant movement. Zirkzee operates as a pressing centre forward, holding up the ball to bring others into play. On the flanks, Leao and Zaniolo act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create central overloads. Leao uses his explosive dribbling to beat defenders one on one, while Zaniolo looks to find spaces between the lines. These three work to pin the last defender and create chances through cutbacks or quick one twos in the box.
One major advantage for Milan is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. The presence of five players in the middle allows them to press in coordinated waves and win the second ball easily. Another strength is the ability to isolate Leao in one on one situations on the wing, forcing the opposition to double up and leave gaps elsewhere.
Milan utilizes a high intensity attacking style that relies on overwhelming the midfield. This formation is best suited for games against teams that play a low block and struggle to track runners from deep.
