Starting Lineup

G. RAMOS · C. PULISIC · HUTCHINSON · MOREIRA · CHUKWUEZE · MODRIC · RABIOT · PAVLOVIC · DE WINTER · M. GILA · MAIGNAN

Milan plays a vertical brand of football that focuses on quick transitions and heavy pressure through a 3-4-3 formation. The team aims to win the ball high up the pitch and hit in behind on the transition to catch opponents out of position. This setup is built to stretch the defence and use wide areas to create goal-scoring opportunities.

MAIGNAN acts as the foundation in goal, often sweeping behind a high line to manage space. The back three consists of PAVLOVIC, DE WINTER, and M. GILA, who operate as a narrow defensive block. PAVLOVIC and M. GILA provide strength in the air and can step into midfield to help build play, while DE WINTER focuses on covering the space behind them. This unit stays compact to deny the turn to opposing attackers and works to win the second ball when the opposition is forced to play long.

The midfield operates as a four-man unit that connects the back line to the attack. MODRIC and RABIOT function as a double pivot, with MODRIC using his passing range to progress through the thirds and RABIOT working to shield the defence and win possession. On the flanks, MOREIRA and CHUKWUEZE act as wide midfielders who provide the necessary width. MOREIRA can push up to support the attack, while CHUKWUEZE carries the ball forward to force the opposition wide.

In the final third, Milan uses three attackers to pin the last defender. C. PULISIC operates as an inverted winger on the left, cutting inside to find space between the lines, while HUTCHINSON stays wide on the right to whip it in from deep. G. RAMOS acts as a lone striker and pressing centre-forward, tasked to hold up the ball and find the feet of the strikers arriving late. The attacking unit focuses on quick combinations and making runs in behind to exploit gaps.

One major strength of this Milan lineup is the ability to create wide overloads when the wingers and wide midfielders combine. The formation also provides numerical superiority in the middle when MODRIC and RABIOT step up to support the press. This allows the team to squeeze the space in the central areas and win it back high up the pitch.

This 3-4-3 formation is designed for teams that want to dominate transitions and use wide players to stretch the opposition. It is particularly effective against opponents that play a high line and can be punished by quick movement in behind.
