Starting Lineup

Varga · Majer · Jovic · Gacinovic · Lykogiannis · Moukoudi · Relvas · Rota · Kairinen · Marin · Strakosha

AEK focuses on high pressing and rapid verticality through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and force errors in the opposition half. By committing many players forward, the team aims to overwhelm the opponent with numbers in central areas and create quick attacking opportunities before the defense can set.

Strakosha plays between the posts, acting as the foundation for the defensive unit. Behind the two central defenders, Relvas and Moukoudi form a narrow defensive block that relies on speed and anticipation. Since there are only two defenders, they often play a high line to compress the space. Relvas and Moukoudi must be prepared to step up to intercept passes or cover large areas of grass if the high press is bypassed.

The midfield is the engine of AEK, operating as a five man line that controls the center of the pitch. Lykogiannis and Rota act as a double pivot to shield the two defenders, providing a screen to stop direct passes. Kairinen and Marin occupy the central channels to recycle possession and drive forward with the ball. Gacinovic plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, finding pockets of space to create chances. This group works to squeeze the space in the middle and press in a mid block when the team loses possession.

In the final third, the team utilizes three attackers to stretch the defence. Jovic and Majer act as wide wingers who look to cut inside and threaten the box. Varga operates as a lone striker, acting as a focal point to hold up the ball and link up with the midfield. The movement of Jovic and Majer creates space for Gacinovic to arrive late into the box. AEK attacks in combinations, using the wide players to pull defenders out of position before playing through the lines to Varga.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in the central midfield zones. By having five players in that area, AEK can often win the second ball and control the tempo of the game. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three and the attacking midfielders to trap the opponent near their own goal. This high intensity can force a long ball from the opposition, which Relvas and Moukoudi can then intercept.

AEK uses this aggressive lineup to dominate games through high pressure and central control. This formation is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
