Panathinaikos aims to be defensively solid and rely on quick breaks using a 5-4-1. This formation is built to sit deep and absorb pressure, making it hard for the opposition to find gaps in the middle or wide areas. The team looks to soak up attacks before hitting the opponent on the transition to catch them out of position.

Tetteh stays between the posts to organize the back line. The defensive unit functions as a back five with Kangwa and Camara acting as the central defenders to win the header and clear the lines. Ounahi provides cover in the middle of the defense to help secure the area. On the flanks, L.Garcia acts as an attacking wing back on the right, while Pellistri performs a similar role on the left to provide width. This system allows the unit to stay compact and force the opponent to play wide.

A flat four-man midfield sits in front of the defensive line to protect the central zone. De Vrij and R.Drongelen operate as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. De Vrij helps to connect the defensive and attacking lines while R.Drongelen works to win the second ball in the middle. On the flanks, Kyriakopoulos and Calabria provide the width in the midfield line, with Kyriakopoulos looking to support the attack while Calabria tracks back to help the wing backs.

The attacking setup relies on a lone striker, Pena, who must work hard to hold up the ball and act as a target man. Pena leads the press from the front to disrupt the opposition build up. When Panathinaikos wins the ball, the wing backs L.Garcia and Pellistri push up to provide width and deliver crosses into the box. The team looks to use combinations in tight spaces or hit in behind on the transition to create chances.

The main strength of this lineup is the compactness when defending in a low block. Having five defenders allows Panathinaikos to stay narrow and deny the turn to central attackers. Another advantage is the ability to use the wing backs to create wide overloads once the team transitions from defense to attack.

This 5-4-1 formation is designed to frustrate superior sides by denying space in the final third. It is best suited for games against high possession teams where the goal is to defend a lead or counter at pace.
