Starting Lineup

Peretz · Bree · Wood · Sochbwck · Manning · JWP · Jander · Downs · Azaz · Sinzer · Larin

Southampton play a high press game using a 4-3-3. The team looks to win the ball back high up the pitch and use quick transitions to punish the opposition. This formation is built to stretch the defence and use wide areas to create chances.

Peretz starts in goal to command his area. The back line operates as a flat back four with Bree at right back and Manning at left back. Bree and Manning are tasked to push up and overlap the wingers to provide width. In the middle, Sochbwck and Wood act as the central defensive pairing, where they must hold the line and cover for the attacking full backs. The unit works together to squeeze the space and keep the distance between the lines small.

A three man midfield provides the engine for Southampton. JWP sits in the single pivot role to shield the defence and recycle possession. JWP is known for his exceptional passing range and ability to control the tempo. Alongside him, Downs and Jander operate as the two central midfielders. Downs and Jander are required to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive unit to the attack. They must also track back to help the full backs when the team loses the ball.

The attacking line uses three players to pin the opposition back. Larin acts as the lone striker, looking to find the feet of the striker and hold up the ball for others. Sinzer and Azaz play as wide wingers, with Sinzer on the left and Azaz on the right. They often cut inside to create space for Manning and Bree to deliver crosses. The front three work together to press from the front, forcing long balls from the opposition.

Southampton gain a clear advantage through their ability to press in coordinated waves. By using the front three and the midfield trio, they can quickly win the ball back in the final third. The team also benefits from wide overloads when the wingers pull wide and the full backs underlap or overlap. This creates many one on one situations for Sinzer and Azaz to exploit.

This 4-3-3 formation is built for a high intensity game that relies on quick ball movement. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
