RB Salzburg Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Krätzig · Schmid · Boma · Veratschnig · Kitano · Vertessen · Konaté · Redzic · Tabakovic · Lindstrøm · ZawieschitzkyRB Salzburg looks to dominate through extreme verticality and aggressive pressing in this 2-5-3. The team aims to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly before the opposition can settle. This formation is built to squeeze the space in the middle and push the play forward through high volume of passing and direct runs.
Zawieschitzky acts as the last line of defense while the back line remains extremely high to support the press. Schmid and Boma operate as a pair of central defenders in a very aggressive high line. These two must be prepared to cover large amounts of grass behind them as they step up to intercept passes. Because there are only two central defenders, they must be ready to win the second ball and clear the lines quickly to prevent counter attacks.
The midfield unit is the engine of RB Salzburg, utilizing a dense five man block to control the center. Krätzig and Veratschnig sit in a double pivot to shield the two defenders and deny the pivot of the opponent. In front of them, Lindstrøm and Kitano operate in the half spaces to link the defense and attack. Vertessen plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to find the feet of the striker and play through the lines. This heavy midfield presence allows the team to recycle possession and keep the opponent pinned in their own half.
The attacking line is designed to stretch the defence using three players across the front. Konaté and Redzic act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to pull the opposition full backs apart. Tabakovic plays as a lone striker and target man to hold up the ball and allow others to join the attack. The movement is designed to create runs in behind and allow the wingers to cut inside into the pockets of space. When the team wins it back high up the pitch, they look to hit in behind on the transition immediately.
One major advantage for RB Salzburg is the massive numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch which makes it hard for opponents to play through the thirds. The team also creates wide overloads because the midfield players can push up to support the wingers. This density allows them to press in pairs and trigger a press effectively across the whole pitch.
This aggressive 2-5-3 formation focuses on suffocating the opponent in their own half through heavy pressing. It is best suited for games where the team needs to dominate possession and force the opposition into making mistakes under pressure.
