Starting Lineup

Roma focuses on a heavy defensive presence and rapid transitions in a 5-2-3. This formation is built to sit in a mid-block and wait for the right moment to hit in behind on the transition. The lineup looks to congest the central areas while leaving the wings open for quick breaks.

Svilar plays behind a back five that stays compact to deny space in the middle. Mancini and Ghilardi act as the central pillars, where Mancini uses his physical presence to win the header and Ghilardi provides cover. Hermoso plays as the right centre-back to help play out from the back. The wing backs, Wesley and Molina, are expected to push high to provide width, but they must track back quickly to maintain a narrow defensive block when the ball is lost.

The midfield functions as a double pivot to protect the central zone. De Roon acts as the primary shield for the defense, using his experience to intercept passes and win the second ball. Pisilli plays alongside him to carry the ball forward and link the defensive unit with the front three. This pair must work hard to compress the midfield and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

In the attacking phase, Roma utilizes three attackers across the front. Castro operates as a lone striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. Mora and Soulè play as wide wingers, with Soulè looking to cut inside to create chances. These players press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. The team relies on combinations between the wingers and the striker to break the line and create runs in behind.

This lineup offers great compactness when defending deep in their own half. Roma can also create wide overloads when Wesley and Molina move up the pitch to support the attackers. The ability to shift quickly from a defensive block to a vertical attack makes them dangerous in transition.
