Roma looks to control matches through a high press and rapid attacking transitions using a 4-3-3. This formation is built to dominate the middle of the pitch and create overloads in the final third. By using this lineup, the team intends to win the ball back high up the pitch and move the ball forward quickly to catch the opposition out of position.

Sketelenburg stays between the posts to command the defensive line. The back four operates as a zonal line where Zanetti acts as a full back to provide width while Nagatomo pushes up to support the attack. In the center, Barzagli and Bisevac form a pairing of central defenders tasked with holding the line and winning headers. Barzagli is known for his positioning and defensive reliability, while Bisevac provides the physical presence needed to clear the lines when under pressure.

The midfield functions as a three man midfield with a single pivot. Chivu sits in front of the defense to shield the back four and win the second ball. Next to him, Marchisio works to connect the defensive and attacking lines by recycling possession and making late runs into the box. Pjanić operates as an attacking ten behind the striker, using his passing range to play through the lines and find teammates in dangerous areas.

Roma utilizes three attackers across the front to stretch the defense. Suárez acts as the central striker, working to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. On the wings, Jovetić and Lamela act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create central threats. This movement allows for cutbacks from the byline and creates space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box. The front three will press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to win possession back quickly. The presence of Pjanić allows Roma to control the tempo and switch play to the wide areas. Furthermore, the inverted movement of Jovetić and Lamela creates wide overloads when the full backs overlap, making it difficult for the opposition to track runners.

This 4-3-3 setup focuses on aggressive pressing and high technical quality in the middle third. It is best suited for games against teams that play a high line and struggle to handle rapid transitions.
