This trio ensures that the center of the pitch is congested for the opponent, making it hard to play through the middle.

Up front, the attack utilizes two forwards in a partnership to stretch the opposition. K. Rummenigge and M. van Basten act as a lethal duo that can exploit any space left behind. K. Rummenigge uses his pace to make runs in behind, while M. van Basten is a master at holding up the ball and playing with his back to goal. They press the opposition back line to force mistakes. The team looks to attack in combinations, using the movement of the attackers to pull defenders out of position and create space for D. Maradona to slip through balls.

A major strength for SL Benfica is the ability to achieve numerical superiority in the middle of the park. The combination of the three midfielders and the dropping D.
