Starting Lineup

Accrington focuses on a direct and vertical style of play using a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to hit teams on the transition and use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition. The goal is to create quick chances through direct passing and aggressive movement in the final third.

CAVIA guards the goal as the goalkeeper. The defensive unit sits in a flat back four with PENONI acting as the left back and GONZALEZ covering the right side. In the center, PUCHETA and GARCIA work as the central defenders to protect the area in front of the keeper. The back line stays compact to defend zonally and ensure they are not caught out when the team pushes up.

The midfield works in two distinct lines to control the center of the pitch. BENITEZ and BENITEZ operate as a double pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. They look to recycle possession and find the wide players quickly. Ahead of them, SOTO and VALLEJOS occupy the wide areas to provide service. These two players are tasked to carry the ball forward and link the defensive side to the attack.

Accrington utilizes two forwards to lead the line in a partnership. MAIDANA and STAFFOLANI work together to press the opposition back line and pin the last defender. They often use runs in behind to catch the defense off guard. The forwards aim to combine in tight spaces or use the wide players to receive the ball out wide. This creates opportunities for cutbacks or quick one-two combinations to find space in the box.

One major advantage of this 4-4-2 is the ability to achieve numerical superiority in the middle when the wide midfielders tuck in. The team can also create wide overloads when the full backs push up to overlap the winger. By staying compact when defending, Accrington makes it very hard for opponents to play through the center.
