De Jong acts as a central midfielder to help link play, while Zanetti and Nagatomo provide stability in the middle of the pitch. Marchisio plays as an attacking midfielder to push into the pockets of space between the opposition midfield and defense. This group must work to win the second ball and ensure that De Jong can progress through the thirds to find the forwards.

Roma employs a massive front four to stretch the defense. Jovetic plays as a left winger who can cut inside to create goal scoring opportunities, while Lamela stays wide on the right to provide width. In the central roles, Pjanić and Suárez work as two forwards in a partnership to pin the last defender. Pjanić looks to find the feet of the striker or play through the lines, while Suárez uses his movement to create space for others. The forwards are expected to press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.
