Liverpool Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Ekitike · Szoboszlai · Macca · Jacquet · Frimpong · Kerkez · Van Dijk · Araujo · Allison · Barcola · GakpoLiverpool focuses on a heavy high press and rapid vertical play using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to squeeze the pitch and win the ball high up the pitch to catch the opposition out of position. By pushing many players forward, the team looks to overwhelm opponents in their own half and create quick attacking transitions.
Alisson acts as a sweeper keeper, playing behind a very high line to cover any long balls played behind the defense. The defensive unit relies on a narrow two man line consisting of Van Dijk and Araujo. Van Dijk uses his aerial strength and ability to command the line, while Araujo provides cover and recovery speed. Because there are only two central defenders, they must hold the line carefully and stay compact to prevent being split by through balls.
The midfield operates as a dense five man unit designed to control the central areas and provide constant pressure. Frimpong and Jacquet occupy the central roles to shield the defense and recycle possession. Kerkez operates as the left midfielder to help control that flank. Moving further forward, Macca and Szoboszlai act as two tens in the half spaces to connect the midfield to the front three. Macca and Szoboszlai look to find pockets of space between the opposition lines, while also pressing aggressively to win the ball back high up the pitch.
The attacking front line consists of three attackers working in close combinations. Ekitike acts as the central striker, holding up the ball to allow others to join the play. Barcola stays wide on the left to stretch the defense, while Gakpo operates on the right. Barcola and Gakpo often look to cut inside to create central overloads or provide space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box. The three forwards press the opposition back line together to force long balls or errors.
Liverpool gains a massive advantage through numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. The presence of five players in the midfield makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. Additionally, the high press from Barcola, Gakpo, and Ekitike can trigger a press in waves, making it hard for the opposition to build from the back. This setup allows the team to dominate territory and pin the opponent into their own defensive third.
This formation creates an aggressive and high tempo game suited for dominating possession and attacking through the center. It is best used against teams that struggle to play out from the back or cannot handle high pressure in their own half.
