Vasco da Gama relies on a heavy defensive presence to suffocate the opposition, utilizing a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to play a low block, focusing on defensive solidity and quick transitions once the ball is won. The goal is to remain compact and deny space between the lines, forcing opponents into wide areas where they can be contained.

Xinyu sits between the posts to provide the last line of defense. The back line functions as a deep five, with Jiyeon acting as the central anchor to command the area. Lynn and Jiwoo operate as wide centre-backs to provide coverage when the wing backs push forward. Soomin and Nien act as attacking wing backs, tasked with providing width and tracking back to form a five man line when defending. This unit works to squeeze the space and defend zonally to protect the central corridor.

The midfield is a flat four designed to maintain a compact block. Captain Seoyeon sits in the single pivot role to shield the defense and pick up runners. Yooyeon and Kotone operate in the central spaces to press in a mid-block and win the second ball. Hayeon provides more presence on the right side to connect the defense and attack. This midfield group works to deny the turn to opposition players and recycle possession to move the team up the pitch.

Vasco da Gama uses Kaede as a lone striker to lead the line. Her role is to hold up the ball and act as a target man to bring the midfielders into the play. When the team wins the ball, the wing backs Soomin and Nien look to spread wide to stretch the defense. The attack relies on quick combinations and runs in behind to catch the opposition out of position. Kaede must press from the front to force a long ball and disrupt the build up of the opposition.

One major advantage for Vasco da Gama is the compactness when defending, making it very difficult for teams to play through the middle. The formation also creates wide overloads when Soomin and Nien join the attack, often isolating wide players in one on one situations. By sitting deep, the team can also hit in behind on the transition to catch defenders high up the pitch.

This formation is built for teams that want to absorb pressure and strike on the break. It is best suited for matches against high possession teams that struggle to break down a crowded central area.
