Millwall prefers to play a high press and heavy vertical game using a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and move it forward quickly to catch opponents before they can settle. The team looks to stretch the defence by using width and aggressive movements to break the lines.

Ivan acts as the last line of defence in goal. The defensive unit sits in a flat back four, with Matheus on the left and Matheus on the right acting as full backs. They must be ready to overlap the winger or track back to cover space behind them. In the center, Zé and Matheus form the heart of the defence, with Zé acting as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back while Matheus provides cover. The defensive line works to hold the line and keep the distance between the defenders and the midfield tight.

The midfield operates as a three man midfield with a carrier and an attacking ten. Patrick plays in the hole as an advanced midfielder to create chances and arrive late into the box. Ahead of him, Edson and Zé occupy the central roles to link the defence and attack. Edson works to drive forward with the ball and carry it through the thirds, while Zé helps to shield the defence and win the second ball. This group must press in a mid-block to force a long ball from the opposition.

Millwall uses three attackers across the front to maintain constant pressure. Gabriel plays as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender and find the feet of the striker when others drop deep. On the flanks, Alef and Jajá operate as inverted wingers who cut inside to create goal scoring opportunities. Alef and Jajá look to isolate a one on one wide or deliver early crosses into the area. The front three work to press from the front, forcing the opposition to play into the crowded midfield.

This formation offers clear tactical advantages through its ability to press high in coordinated waves. By using Patrick as a shadow striker behind Gabriel, Millwall creates numerical superiority in the central areas. The team also benefits from the width provided by the full backs, which allows for quick switches of play to catch the opposition out of position. This ability to transition and hit in behind on the transition makes them very dangerous.
