MTK Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Kovalik · Keszei · Danszky · Jenei · Nagy · Kovacs (Vasas) · Vasas (Tacaks) · Kuti · Bödör · Halapi · SandorMTK focuses on a direct and vertical style of play using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to strike quickly in transition and use wide areas to stretch the opposition. By utilizing a heavy defensive base, the team can sit deep and wait for the right moment to break quickly.
Kovalik acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back five consists of a narrow defensive block with Nagy and Kovacs (Vasas) occupying the central roles. Nagy provides strength in the air while Kovacs (Vasas) acts as a covering defender. Danszky sits alongside them to ensure the central area remains compact. On the flanks, Keszei operates as an attacking wing back to provide width, while Jenei plays as a left wing back to support the defensive line and overlap when the ball moves wide.
The midfield relies on a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Vasas (Tacaks) and Kuti work to occupy the central zones, tasked with winning the second ball and protecting the back five. Vasas (Tacaks) sits deeper to shield the defense, while Kuti looks to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive unit to the attacking line. This pair must work hard to intercept passes and immediately look to find the front three once possession is regained.
In the attacking third, MTK uses three attackers across the front to pressure the opposition back line. Bödör operates as a lone striker, looking to hold up the ball and link up play with the wide players. Sandor stays wide on the right as an inverted winger to cut inside, while Halapi stays on the left to stretch the defense. These three forwards press in pairs from the front to force a long ball from the opponent, creating chances for the wing backs to join the attack.
A major strength of this MTK formation is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of Keszei and Jenei. When the ball is on one side, the opposite wing back can tuck in to help the midfield, providing compactness when defending. The team also benefits from the speed of transition, as the direct passing from the double pivot to Sandor or Halapi can catch opponents out of position before they can reset.
This 5-2-3 formation provides a solid defensive foundation while remaining lethal on the break. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their defensive line.
