Starting Lineup

The back line operates as a back five where Jamie and Hugo act as the central defenders, while Jesse r covers the right side of the trio. Jamie and Hugo must be dominant in the air and ready to sweep behind a high line if the team pushes up. Beau and Hamish function as attacking wing backs, tasked with providing width and tracking back to support the central defenders. This defensive unit works to keep the distances between the lines small, ensuring no gaps open up in the middle.

In front of the defense, Henry plays as a single pivot to shield the back line and win the second ball. He acts as the primary link between the defense and the rest of the team. Foote and Lukas operate as two central midfielders who must manage the tempo and connect the lines. Lukas and Foote are expected to carry the ball forward and find the attackers with precise passes. This three man midfield works to squeeze the space in the middle, forcing the opposition to play around them rather than through them.

The attack utilizes two forwards in a partnership to stretch the opposition. Jessie and Horse work together to lead the press from the front, aiming to disrupt the opponent build up play. Jessie often acts as a pressing centre forward to force long balls, while Horse looks to find space for runs in behind. When Botafogo wins the ball, the wing backs Beau and Hamish push high to provide width, allowing Jessie and Horse to focus on central movements and link up play between the lines.

This formation offers clear tactical advantages, such as compactness when defending and the ability to create wide overloads from overlapping wing backs. By having five defenders, Botafogo remains very difficult to penetrate centrally. The team can also hit in behind on the transition, using the pace of the two strikers to catch the opposition defense out of position.
