Panathinaikos Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Pena · Tsapras · De Vrij · Touba (Van Drongelen) · Kyriakopoulos · Camara · Jagusic (Rastoder) · Cerin (Chirivella) · Tetteh · Zaroury (Pellistri) · Andino (Taborda)Panathinaikos focuses on a high press and quick verticality through a 4-3-3. This formation is built to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately look for ways to break the lines. The team aims to squeeze the space in the opponent half to force turnovers before the opposition can settle into their rhythm.
Pena operates between the posts to manage the back line. The defensive unit sits in a high line with Tsapras and Kyriakopoulos acting as full backs who push high to provide width. De Vrij and Touba form a central pairing where De Vrij uses his experience to cover space and Touba focuses on winning the second ball. The back four works to maintain a compact block to prevent balls played into the channels.
The midfield utilizes a three-man midfield with a carrier to move the team forward. Camara acts as the pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession when the team needs to reset. Jagusic and Cerin operate in the half-spaces to link the defensive unit to the attackers. Cerin drives forward with the ball to carry it into the final third while Jagusic seeks to intercept passes and press aggressively to win it back high up the pitch.
In the attacking third, Panathinaikos employs three attackers across the front. Tetteh acts as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender and hold up the ball for others. Zaroury and Andino play as wide wingers who look to cut inside to create central overloads. These players work to isolate a one-on-one wide or deliver early crosses when they get to the byline to catch the opposition out of position.
One major advantage for Panathinaikos is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having the front three and the midfield trio move together, they can easily trigger a press in the opposition half. Another strength is the speed of transition when the ball is won, allowing the wingers to exploit space behind the opposition full backs immediately.
This 4-3-3 formation relies on high intensity and quick ball movement. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
