Starting Lineup

Charlton looks to play a game of resilience and quick transitions using a 5-4-1 formation. In the middle, LCM and RCM work to control the central space and win the second ball. These four players must move together to squeeze the space between the lines. The goal is to intercept passes and quickly transition the ball toward the wings or the lone striker.

Charlton relies on a lone striker, the CF, to lead the line. The CF must hold up the ball and wait for support from the midfield or the wingers. When the team attacks, the LM and RM will push higher to join the CF, often creating chances through cutbacks from the byline or by finding the striker in tight spaces. The attacking movement is designed to create runs in behind or allow the wingers to cross into the box when the opposition is caught out of position.

One major advantage for Charlton is the compactness when defending, as it is very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. The wide players and wing backs can also create wide overloads to catch the opposition defense off guard during a transition.
