Starting Lineup

Moore · Martin · Dicks · Stewart · Bonds · Peters · Brooking · Devonshire · Di Canio · Hurst · Parkes

West Ham aims to play a direct and vertical brand of football using a 4-2-4. This formation is built to stretch the opposition by using four dedicated attackers to pin the last defender and create scoring opportunities. The lineup prioritizes quick transitions and getting the ball forward as fast as possible to catch the opponent out of position.

Parkes stays between the posts to command the area. The back line functions as a flat back four to maintain compactness when defending. Dicks acts as the left back to provide width, while Stewart plays as the right back to support the defensive unit. In the center, Moore and Martin form the heart of the defense. Moore acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back, while Martin provides cover and aerial strength to protect the zone. This unit works together to hold the line and prevent runners from getting behind.

The midfield works as a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Peters and Bonds form this two man midfield to provide a screen for the defense. Bonds is tasked to shield the defense and win the second ball, while Peters connects the defensive and attacking lines by carrying the ball forward. They must work hard to compress the midfield and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines. Their main job is to recycle possession and quickly find the forwards once the ball is won.

West Ham utilizes a front line consisting of four attackers to overwhelm the opposition. Di Canio and Hurst operate as a central partnership, with Hurst acting as a target man to hold up the ball and Di Canio looking to find spaces between the lines. On the flanks, Brooking and Devonshire play as wide wingers who hug the touchline to spread the defense. This creates opportunities for runs in behind and allows the wingers to whip it in for the strikers. The forwards are expected to press from the front to force a long ball from the opponent.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages through its heavy offensive presence. The ability to isolate wide players in one on one situations is a key strength when Brooking or Devonshire find space. Additionally, West Ham can use the two central strikers to create a constant threat in the air and on the ground. This high volume of attackers makes it very difficult for the opposition to defend in transition.

The 4-2-4 formation focuses on aggressive attacking play and quick forward movement. It is best suited for matches where West Ham needs to break down a low block or exploit a high line through direct play.
