Genoa focuses on a heavy mid-block and high intensity work rate, utilizing a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to stay compact and win the ball back in central areas to catch opponents off guard. The team aims to congest the middle of the pitch to make it difficult for the opposition to progress through the lines, often relying on quick verticality once possession is regained.

Justin Bijlow starts in goal to anchor the defensive unit. The back line sits as a flat back four, where Mitaj acts as an attacking left back to provide width. On the opposite side, Ehizibue provides support on the right flank. In the heart of the defense, Vásquez and Otoa hold the line, with Vásquez looking to cover space while Otoa remains dominant in the air. The defensive unit works together to squeeze the space between the lines and maintain a narrow block to deny central entries.

The midfield consists of a five man group that controls the center of the pitch. Amorim and Frendrup operate as a double pivot to shield the defense and intercept passes. In front of them, Wiafe, Baldanzi, and Meichtry form a central trio that connects the defensive and attacking lines. Baldanzi acts as the creative hub to play through the lines, while Wiafe and Meichtry work to press aggressively to win the ball high. This group is tasked to recycle possession and ensure the team can shift quickly from a defensive posture to an attacking one.

Genoa employs a lone striker in Osmajić to lead the line. He acts as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposition back line and hold up the ball for the arriving midfielders. The attack relies on the midfielders to make late runs into the box to support him. When the team wins the ball, they look to hit in behind on the transition, using the width provided by the full backs to stretch the defense. Osmajić must work to pin the last defender to create space for Baldanzi and the others to exploit.

A primary strength of this Genoa formation is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very hard for opponents to play through the center. The ability to press in a mid-block ensures that the team remains compact and hard to break down. Additionally, the presence of the double pivot allows the more advanced midfielders to commit forward without leaving the back four exposed to a counter attack.

This 4-5-1 lineup is designed to be defensively solid and lethal on the transition. It is best suited for games against ball dominant teams where controlling the central zones is the priority.
