Man City Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Rulli (1) · Lewis (2) · Reis (4) · Khusanov (5) · Ait-Nouri (3) · Bouaddi (6) · Cherki (10) · Oreilly (8) · Ndiaye (9) · Mcaidoo (7) · Allan (11)Man City aims to control games through a high press and rapid transitions using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the pitch and win the ball back high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position. By maintaining a heavy presence in the final third, the team seeks to dominate through direct attacking movements and quick ball movement.
Rulli operates between the posts to provide stability from the back. The defensive unit functions as a back three consisting of Bouaddi, Khusanov, and Reis. Bouaddi acts as the central anchor, while Khusanov and Reis provide coverage and help play out from the back. Ahead of them, Ait-Nouri and Lewis act as attacking wing backs. Ait-Nouri pushes high to provide width on the left, while Lewis carries the ball forward on the right to overlap the winger. This unit works to hold the line and protect the central zones when the team sits in a mid-block.
The midfield operates as a double pivot to bridge the gap between the defence and the attack. Oreilly and Cherki occupy the central roles, tasked with winning the second ball and recycling possession. Oreilly focuses on connecting the defensive lines by receiving the ball from the centre-backs, while Cherki looks to drive forward with the ball into the half-spaces. Together, they must protect the space in front of the back three and ensure the team can progress through the thirds effectively.
The attacking line uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Ndiaye leads the line as a pressing centre-forward, looking to pin the last defender and find space in behind. On the flanks, Allan acts as an inverted winger on the left, cutting inside to create central presence, while Mcaidoo plays as a wide winger on the right to hug the touchline. This combination allows Man City to attack in combinations, utilizing the width from the wing backs to deliver crosses while the forwards look to make runs in behind or arrive late into the box.
This formation offers significant advantages in transition and wide overloads. The overlapping runs from Lewis and Ait-Nouri create numerical superiority against opposing full backs, forcing the defence to shift constantly. Additionally, the presence of three attackers allows the team to press from the front in coordinated waves, making it difficult for the opposition to build play from the back.
Man City utilizes this setup to dominate possession and apply relentless pressure on the opponent. This formation is best suited for matches where the team needs to overwhelm a low block or exploit spaces left by a high defensive line.
