Viking Football Formation
Starting Lineup
(GK) · (LB) · (CB) · (CB) · (RB) · (CDM) · (AMF) · (AMF) · (CM) · (ST) · (ST)Viking focuses on a heavy counter attacking style with a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting the opposition with speed on the break. The goal is to remain compact and hard to break down, waiting for the right moment to launch attacks through the center and wide channels.
The defensive unit is anchored by GK in goal, working behind a narrow defensive block. A back five consisting of LCB, RCB, and a CDM playing as the central defender provides a solid foundation. LWB and RWB act as attacking wing backs to provide width, while LCB and RCB focus on defending zonally and winning the header when crosses come in. The CDM sits deep to shield the back line and sweep behind the other defenders if the line is broken.
In the middle of the pitch, Viking employs a three-man midfield with a carrier. The LCM and RCM operate as two advanced midfielders who link the defensive unit to the forwards. They must press aggressively to win the ball high when the team transitions. The LCM and RCM also look to carry the ball forward to drive the team out of their low block. This midfield trio must stay close together to ensure the space between the lines is not exploited by the opponent.
The attack features two forwards in a partnership with LS and RS playing as the front two. These two attackers often act as a pressing centre-forward duo to force the opposition back line into mistakes. They look to hit in behind on the transition, using their pace to run into the space left by advancing defenders. The combination of LS and RS relies on quick link up play to create chances, often looking for a through ball to split the defence.
Viking gains a tactical advantage through the compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to find gaps in the central areas. The formation also offers wide overloads when LWB and RWB push forward to support the attackers. These overlapping runs allow the team to stretch the defence and create crossing opportunities from the flanks.
This 5-3-2 formation provides a solid platform for a team that prefers to defend deep and strike on the break. It is best suited for matches against possession based teams that leave space behind their defensive line.
