Celtic Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Duran · Hogh · Hassan · Yang · Buer · Nygren · McGregor · Johnstone · Carter Vickers · Scales · TierneyCeltic focuses on a direct and vertical style of play using a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to exploit gaps in the opposition defense by using quick transitions and wide presence. The team looks to win the ball and push forward immediately to catch opponents out of position.
Carter Vickers stays between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back five consists of Buer and Scales as the central defenders with McGregor acting as a covering defender. Johnstone and Tierney operate as attacking wing backs who provide width and overlap the midfielders. The central defenders aim to win the header and clear the lines during defensive spells, while the wing backs must track back to maintain a narrow defensive block when the team sits deep.
The midfield operates as a three-man midfield with a carrier. Nygren sits in the middle to shield the defense and recycle possession. On either side, Yang and Hassan work to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Hassan drives forward with the ball to support the transition, while Yang looks to win the second ball and find the feet of the striker. This central trio must compress the midfield to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.
Celtic employs two forwards in a partnership up front. Hogh plays as the pressing centre-forward to trigger a press from the front, while Duran works as the partner to hold up the ball and play one-two combinations. The attackers aim to make runs in behind the defense to stretch the defense. When the wing backs get to the byline, they look to deliver early crosses to the two strikers. The goal is to create isolation in one on one situations for the forwards.
One major advantage for Celtic is the ability to provide wide overloads from overlapping full backs. When Johnstone and Tierney push high, they create extra numbers in the attacking third. Another strength is the compactness when defending, as the five defenders and three midfielders can squeeze the space to deny the turn. This makes it very difficult for opponents to find passing lanes through the center of the pitch.
This 5-3-2 formation relies on quick transitions and strong wide play to break down opponents. It is best suited for matches against teams that play with a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
