The midfield utilizes a double pivot to manage the center of the pitch. Fabián works to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often dropping deep to receive from the defenders and recycle possession. Beside him, Fermin presses aggressively to win the ball high and makes late runs into the box to support the attack. This two man pairing must work hard to deny the pivot of the opposition and cover the spaces left by the attacking wing backs.

In the attacking third, Spain uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Lamine acts as an inverted winger on the right, cutting inside to create space for Porro, while Oyarzabal operates on the left to pull wide and deliver early crosses. Espi serves as the lone striker, acting as a pressing centre forward to pin the last defender and hold up the ball for the runners behind. The goal is to create combinations in tight spaces and use the width to isolate defenders in one on one situations.

The tactical advantages for Spain include the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of Porro and Cucurella. This formation also allows for compactness when defending, as the back five and the double pivot can form a very narrow block to deny central passing lanes. Additionally, the team can transition quickly by hitting in behind on the transition once Fermin or Fabián intercept a pass.
