SK Sturm focuses on a high press and verticality through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately hurt the opponent with rapid forward movements. By committing many bodies to the middle and front, the team looks to control the center of the pitch and stretch the opposition through direct play.

Khudyakov operates between the posts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit consists of a two man back line with Koller and Vallci acting as the central defenders. Because there are only two players in the deep block, Koller and Vallci must hold the line and be ready to step up to engage attackers. They often have to cover large amounts of space behind them, requiring them to be dominant in the air and quick to intercept long balls.

The midfield is packed to create massive control in the center. Balbo and Heil act as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. S. Seidl and Gorenc Stankovic operate as two tens in the half spaces to link the deep players to the attack, while Kiteishvili plays as an advanced ten behind the striker. This grouping allows Balbo to protect the two center backs while S. Seidl and Gorenc Stankovic drive forward with the ball to find the final pass.

SK Sturm utilizes three attackers to pin the opposition back. Weiper leads the line as a pressing centre forward to harass the defenders. Diakité and Rozga act as wide wingers who cut inside to create central overloads. The attacking unit is designed to create runs in behind and deliver early crosses into the box. When the team wins the ball, Diakité and Rozga look to isolate the fullback in one on one situations to break the line quickly.

One main advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the five midfielders and three attackers to squeeze the space. This creates numerical superiority in midfield, making it hard for opponents to play through the lines. Another strength is the ability to transition at pace, as the wide attackers are already positioned to exploit gaps as soon as the double pivot wins the ball.

This 2-5-3 formation relies on extreme aggression and high energy to overwhelm opponents. It is best suited for games where SK Sturm needs to dominate possession and force the opponent into mistakes in their own half.
