Starting Lineup

Cresswell · Rouault · Merlin · Frankowski · Thomasson · Lepaul · Rongier · Szymanski · Al-Tamari · Mayenda · Samba

Rennes focuses on a high press and aggressive verticality, operating with a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition through sheer numbers in the attacking third. By pushing the players high, the team aims to win the ball back quickly and strike before the opponent can organize a defense.

Samba plays behind a very high line with only two central defenders. Cresswell and Rouault act as the lone pair in the middle, tasked with covering massive amounts of space behind them. Because the team plays so high, these two must be ready to track runners and defend against long balls. They do not have full backs to help, so they must hold the line and engage attackers immediately to prevent being bypassed.

The midfield operates as a box containing a double pivot and two attacking midfielders. Merlin and Frankowski form the pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Merlin often looks to drive forward with the ball to link the lines, while Frankowski works to disrupt the opposition and win the second ball. In front of them, Thomasson and Rongier operate in the half spaces to create chances. Thomasson presses aggressively to win the ball high, while Rongier looks to find space to play through the lines.

Rennes utilizes four attackers to stretch the defense and pin the last defender. Szymanski and Lepaul play as two forwards in a partnership, often looking to link up play between the lines or run in behind. Mayenda and Al-Tamari act as wide wingers who stay high to provide width. Mayenda looks to cut inside to find goalscoring opportunities, while Al-Tamari stays wide to whip it in or cross on the run. This front four is designed to create constant pressure and force turnovers in the final third.

The main strength of this Rennes lineup is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By crowding the midfield and attacking zones, they create numerical superiority in the final third. This formation also offers great speed of transition, as the players are already positioned close to the opponent goal when the ball is won back. The heavy presence of four attackers makes it very difficult for a back four to manage the constant movement.

This high pressing formation is designed to suffocate opponents who struggle to play out from the back. It is best suited for games where Rennes wants to dictate a frantic tempo and exploit a disorganized defensive line.
